About
Judaism is Psychedelic is a space of exploration and expression, where ancient wisdom meets the modern psychedelic movement. In this newsletter, you’ll find essays and hot takes, practical guidance and critical theory, musics on medicine, mysticism, and the madness of it all.
My expertise and approach to writing is both experiential and academic. My perspective is based off a lifetime growing up in the psychedelic space, behind the scenes with pioneers and family friends like Ram Dass and Timothy Leary, both close contemporaries of my father, Bruce Margolin, who dedicated his career to legalizing cannabis in California. After college at UC Berkeley, where I majored in “Rhetoric & Cognitive Linguistics”, and took classes on “Drugs and the Brain” or “Quantum Consciousness,” in addition to French, Russian, and yes—Yiddish 101—I earned a master’s in journalism at Columbia, during which time, as a student “reporter,” I fell in with New York’s Hasidic psychedelic underground. I soon dropped the pretense of being an objective observer, and went gonzo (think Hunter Thompson, but in the form of 5’1”, bicoastal Jewish girl), as the stories I pursued became my life, and my life became the story. (Read more about it in Exile & Ecstasy).
I’ve been around the block, so to speak, or perhaps more literally, to the top of the mountain and back down again, across seas and back home—on a path of running and returning, tripping and tshuva, flying and grounding, the old ratzu v’shuv. I’ve written dozens of articles for outlets like Rolling Stone, Playboy, the Village Voice, VICE, and several others about psychedelics, cannabis, and Jewish life, before going on to co-found DoubleBlind Magazine and the Jewish Psychedelic Summit.
My perspective on psychedelics, Judaism, and where they intersect is based off thousands of hours…
Interviewing industry pioneers from institutions like MAPS, Columbia University, Johns Hopkins, UCLA, Naropa, Imperial College, and more, both for stories I’ve written or edited, in addition to creating curriculum for in-person workshops and online courses on psychedelic best practice
Observing, helping, or holding space in a variety of psychedelic environments, from ceremonies to psytrance festivals to individual sessions, shepherding seekers through journeys of faith & fun, healing & heresy, embodiment & energetic alignment
Pursuing my own coursework in narrative therapy, medicine carriership, Zendo Sit (holding space/trip sitting), Lev Emunah (therapy based in Kabbalistic and Hasidic methodology) + my own personal practice of yoga (20+ years), Breslov Chassidis, and dance
And of course, deepening a consistent and ever-evolving relationship with psychedelics (beginning at 18), or more specifically, psychedelic consciousness—and even more important than that, with G-d
